Biennial of illustrations Bratislava is an international competitive exhibition of originals of children’s books. A workshop for fresh illustrators from various countries and continents – UNESCO-BIB Workshop of Albín Brunovský is traditionally held as a part of BIB. It was founded in 1983 in cooperation of UNESCO, BIB Secretariat and The University of Creative Arts in Bratislava. Ordinarily it was founded for artists of the, so-called, Third World. This undertaking was from the beginning taken up by a repetitively significant Slovak illustrator, representative and founder of the Slovak school of illustration – Albín Brunovský. In the following years were these workshops led by other Slovak illustrators: Karol Ondreička, Dušan Kállay/1995/ Martin Kellenberger /1997/, Peter Čisárik /1999/, Ľuboslav Paľo /2003,2007/ and repeatedly professor Dušan Kállay /2001,2005,2009/. The workshops have their own theme. They are tied to a story, specific book or motive. /The Jungle Book – 1997, Alice in the Wonderland – 1999, Fantastic zoology, or The Present World mythology – 2001, Traditional untraditionally – 2003, International picture vocabulary – 2005, Picture Book -2007, Encyclopedia of fairy – tale being - 2009 /.
The workshop usually lasts for a week. Traditionally, it has been held in a renaissance mansion in Moravany nad Váhom with an exception of the year 2001 when it took place in Čierna voda and 2005 when it was held in Galbov mlyn , 2007 in Bratislava and the year 2009 in the hotel Striebornica in Moravany nad Váhom.
Up till now, these 14 seminars have been attended by 117 illustrators from 50 countries, which have created more than 350 illustration origins.
The 10th year /2001/ had its own unique character, philosophy, extent, specifics and atmosphere. Due to the NORAD’s (Norwegian agency of development Cooperation) financial help from Oslo, mediated by UNESCO with Mrs. Maha Bulos being the representative, it could be organized in a much broader style. It offered a bigger time space /18 days/, an option to participate 20 artists from various Eastern and Central European countries as well as from the rest of the world. It was undoubtedly interesting by the make-up of its scholarly leadership. /Dušan Kállay-Slovakia, Lillian Broger-Denmark, Regina Yolanda Werneck –Brazil, Meshack Asare – Ghana/
