Dear Ladies, dear Gentlemen,
It is our great pleasure to inform you about the 22nd Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava (BIB) 2009 and to introduce the events which will accompany this world-famous competition of children’s book illustrations. The opening ceremony will take place on Friday, the 4th of September 2009 in the historic building of the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava. The competition part of BIB as well as other representative exhibitions will be located at the Dom kultúry (the House of Culture) at Námestie SNP No. 12 as has been done in the past.
In addition to the competition within the children’s book illustrations, during the current biennial we will offer exhibitions of BIB Grand Prix winners from the previous BIB competition as well as the winners of H. CH. Andersen Prize for the year 2008. In the central Hall of Honour of the House of Culture a large collection of illustrations by the German illustrator Einar Turkowski will be presented as part of BIB 2009. Mr. Turkowski was awarded Grand Prix BIB 2007 for his illustrations. We will also show the works of Roberto Innocenti from Italy who was awarded with H. CH. Andersen Prize 2008 for his illustrations. Together with the originals and reproductions of the awarded artists you will be able to view books and the text by Juerg Schubiger from Switzerland who was awarded H. CH. Andersen Prize 2008 in literature.
It has become a tradition at BIB that at each competition we also introduce the work of one of the significant Slovak illustrators. In 1997 it was Albín Brunovský, one of the founders of BIB. In 1999 it was Vincent Hložník, and in 2001 we presented a collection of originals of illustrations, drawings and graphics of Ľudovít Fulla. In 2003 we presented illustration work of Štefan Cpín while in 2005 it was the work of Ľubomír Kellenberger. In 2007, a work of an outstanding Slovak illustrator Viera Gergeľová was introduced. In 2009 we will have the honor of presenting to you the work of Ladislav Nesselman.
A collection of Noma Concours (Asia / Pacific Cultural Centre for Unesco) illustrations will be part of the exposition in these premises as well.
In addition to the exhibition at the House of Culture, BIB has also organised side exhibitions at the foreign institutes of different countries having diplomatic offices located in Bratislava. And directly at BIBIANA’s Gallery, the International House of Arts for Children, there will be an exhibit installed from the selection of works made by the Slovak illustrator Peter Uchnár, the winner of Golden Apple BIB 1999. The art historian Mgr. Barbara Brathová will be the curator of this exhibition.
After awarding the prestigious prizes (Grand Prix, 5 Golden Apples, 5 Plaques, and Honorary Mentions to publishing houses) by the International Jury, consisting of book culture experts from various countries, the event will continue with the meeting of the International Committee and an inseparable part of BIB – the International Symposium. This year, Art Historian Mgr. Viera Anoškinová took over the leadership of the Symposium. After the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava has concluded, we will prepare the Symposium Proceedings with the inseparable picture appendices.
The theme of the International Symposium BIB 2009 is:
The Relationship Between the Illustration and the Text
1/ Comparison of the strategies of illustrators of various editions of Caroll Lewis’s book Alice in Wonderland
2/ Examples of the discovery in communication between the illustration and the text in a book selected by the lecturer himself/herself.
The Albín Brunovský BIB-UNESCO Workshop taking place directly after the Symposium is another important part of BIB. This year’s one-week workshop will take place in Moravany nad Váhom, at the Hotel Striebornica. The leader of the workshop will be the famous Slovak illustrator Prof. Dušan Kállay. The theme of the workshop is:
Encyclopedia of Fairy-Tale Beings
The originals created at the workshop will be included in printed materials and presented at exhibitions both in Slovakia and abroad. As in the past years, the coordinator of the workshop will be Mgr. Barbara Brathová.
